Penclawdd Cocklers at work

Penclawdd lies on the North Gower Coast overlooking the estuary towards Llanelli. It was once a thriving commercial centre with coal mines and copper-smelting industries, both served by a small port and the Great Western Railway.

Today Penclawdd is better known for its association with the cockling industry which dates back to Roman times. The local produce being taken to the market in Swansea for sale.
Once the collecting of cockles was viewed as woman's work, but today it is mechanised using four wheel drive vehicles.
